PROJECT SCHEDULE

The project schedule is the brain of the operation, essential for every project. For a bathroom, this schedule is very involved, with coordination of ordering materials, subcontractor management and inspection deadlines. We will deliver a project schedule in the form of a gantt chart at the start of your project, and update it as time goes along. We work alongside you to schedule the arrival of all necessary materials before demolition begins to ensure the project runs smoothly and quickly... To the right you'll see an example gantt chart.

ORDERING MATERIALS

We will coordinate the ordering and delivering of materials with you as the project start date approaches to ensure the seamless execution of the project once construction begins. Materials that are design selections are your responsibility to source. As soon as design work begins, we will share with you a Selections Spreadsheet where you can keep track of all the decisions you need to make about your bathroom and all the materials you need to order.

We will not include the items you order in our estimated project cost as you are the purchaser.

DEMOLITION & REFRAMING

What to expect:

  • Dumpster is dropped off on street or driveway
  • Area protection is typically installed to protect the areas that are not in the scope of work
  • If your home is built on a slab and you are moving any plumbing systems, trenching will be required. This is accomplished by cutting into the concrete and running water/drain lines to new locations.
  • All debris will be cleaned and space will be organized daily

It's time to start your project! Demolition may include removal of existing vanity, appliances, walls, ceilings, old fixtures and more! It is important to remember that once demolition begins, you should be prepared to not use your bathroom until the project is completed. Don't worry though, it'll all be worth it in the end! In a full renovation, everything is removed to the studs. This means the walls and ceiling must be replaced and refinished.

Reframing will take place anytime you want to alter the layout of your bathroom. This will happen after demolition and before MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) rough-ins.

ELECTRICAL ROUGH IN

The electrical rough-in stage includes the removal, relocation and installation of electrical conduits, wiring, switches and outlets throughout your bathroom. This is the foundation upon which the fixtures, switches, outlets, and other electrical systems will operate. Our electrician will coordinate with our team and the set of plans or blueprints to ensure the correct placement of each item.

What to expect:

  • Conduits and wires everywhere! Conduits are installed to route electrical wires safely from the main electrical panel to outlets, switches, and fixtures. Proper placement minimizes electrical interference and ensures compliance with safety codes.
  • At this point in the process it is common to have certain breakers turned off to ensure safety in the house. They can be turned back on as soon as it is safe to do so!

Installing pipes, drains, and fixtures is the essence of plumbing rough-in, which provides water supply and disposal in your home. The proper placement of plumbing components is essential for efficient water distribution and waste removal, resulting in a comfortable and functional bathroom. Usually, the plumbing and electrical rough-in are done simultaneously to optimize the installation process.

PLUMBING ROUGH IN

What to expect:

  • Depending on the scale and size of your project, when working on the plumbing rough in, the water supply to the entire home may be shut down. Once everything has been rerouted and reconnected, it will all be turned back on.

CEMENT BOARD & WATERPROOFING

It is now time to close up the walls and begin installing all the cool new tile and shiny fixtures you selected. Once the plumbing and electrical have been run to their new locations, we’ll install our cement board (also known as durrock and hardiebacker) and waterproof the space. Waterproofing is an ESSENTIAL part of the project as it will ensure you don’t have leaks in the future. After cement board goes up and waterproofing takes place, tile will start going on the walls!

What to expect:

  • Waterproofing will be installed in all areas exposed to excessive water.
  • Both drywall and cement boards are installed during this phase. Tape and "mud" (joint compound) are used to make the joints smooth.
  • This is an exciting phase of the project where you will finally see the new space come to life.

TILEWORK

Tile is an eye-catching focal point of any bathroom that also adds a practical water barrier to protect wall surfaces. It creates a beautiful finishing touch with many styles and materials to match your preferences. You may choose to apply tile floor-to-ceiling, only in the shower, or only on the floor, etc. Depending on your style, the same tile can be applied throughout the bathroom or you can get creative and mix and match (we recommend using no more than 3 different types of tile in the room).

Schluter rounds out the edges of your tile to create a clean border so the edges don’t show.

Grout is used for filling joints or seams between tiles, and mortar is used as a bonding agent underneath the tiles.

Curb vs. Curbless?

The curb of a shower is a step or barrier that keeps the water of your shower contained.

Sills are located atop knee walls, niches and curbs to direct water back into the shower.

What to expect:

  • The selection of the material and orientation is chosen by the homeowner. This typically looks like going to Home Depot, Lowe's, Floor & Decor, or searching online to choose tile, grout, and schluter.
  • Floor tile is installed first so that wall tile can sit on top of it coherently

FLOORING

Flooring can come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and materials. Selecting flooring will ultimately depend on your taste and lifestyle. We suggest steering clear of hardwoods in your bathroom because the moisture will cause it to buckle and swell. For obvious reasons, also avoid carpet. Tile is your best bet for bathroom floors and comes in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes.

What to expect:

  • Floors are installed after the slab or subfloor is perfectly flat. This may require the grinding away of unwanted areas. During this stage, the installers will be sure to block off areas in order to contain dust.
  • Self-leveling cement may be applied to fill in low spots, creating a strong, reliable, flat surface.
  • A moisture barrier will typically be applied underneath the flooring to prevent warping of material.

TIME FOR THE VANITY, SINK, & FAUCET

Like tile, vanities play a role in aesthetic appeal and in function. No vanity is complete without a sink and faucet; therefore, all three need to be chosen in relation to each other for a seamless result that’s aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Backsplash?

While not essential, backsplashes in a bathroom prevent rot, mold and mildew behind your sink area. 4-inches of backsplash are recommended along the width of the vanity to keep water from seeping into your walls.

What to expect:

  • Vanity will be placed or built in proper spot
  • Countertop will be templated and installed if applicable
  • Sink and faucet installed

VANITY

Prefab vs Custom? It all depends on your style! If prefab won’t do, we can go through our cabinet suppliers for a more custom option or we can build a vanity to perfectly match your vision.

  • Mirrors

PAINT

Color Paint Splash

Here to round it all out - the painting phase! We recommend selecting mold and mildew resistant interior, semi-gloss or satin finish paint for your bathroom. This type of paint has a special resin that locks out moisture once it dries to prevent peeling or bubbles from forming. It is best to wait 48 hours after applying paint before showering to allow the paint to dry completely and yield the long-term water resistance.

TIME FOR THE PUNCH LIST!

When everything else has been completed, we will perform a detailed sweep of the bathroom and compile a punch list of any outstanding items that need attending. This is where we scrutinize our work, catch any hiding imperfections, and correct them. If there is anything you are unsatisfied with, let us know so we can correct it here.

CLIENT TIP...

No project is perfect until the punch list.

While your bathroom may look 100% complete, it’s only 97% there. We want to ensure your full satisfaction, and that's where punch lists come into play. Please be patient with us as we near the end.
